Death of a blog?

Permalink 06:50:10 pm, Categories: General, 285 words

It's not a big news-worthy thing in the land of the Net, but I'm contemplate blog-icide.

My fiancee, Asli of PerfectImagination.co.uk, has just bought a domain so that she has somewhere to put her Harry Potter Fanfiction in her own archive. She then wanted visitors to be able to comment, which would require a database - only we're using all six of our allocated databases (one for the CMS at HWT, one for the CMS at Skins@HWT, one for the HWT forums, one for the CMS at Perfect Imagination, one for my own local copy of PPHLogger (one that ignores AOL dialup users) and one for this blog).

I've managed to cut it down to five by combining the forum and main HWT database in to one (HWT gets around 70 visitors per day, so sharing connections isn't exactly a big issues!), but now I'm wondering what the point of this blog is. Even with my regularly updated Regular Expression spam filter I've received far more successful spam comments in the last few months than I've received comments in the whole life of the blog, I've done various bits of development that I haven't blogged, and I've not got anything interesting or insightful to say about any standards, languages, software packages or anything technical like that. All in all, the original idea for this blog was good, but it's lacking its point and it's taking up a database for it.

The blog will remain for a while (at least until I work out a static HTML replacement of links to various projects) but don't worry if it disappears. Yes, that means you, Ben - I'm sure you're about the only one who reads this! :D

Hmm, you could alternatively switch webhost to something that'll host unlimited databases/domains/etc.?

This is, of course, a shameless plug for Dreamhost. Prod me if you want discount.

I've looked at them before and there was something that wasn't as good about them - can't remember if it was just that they didn't have the offer on then and that I was potentially hosting more than three domains or something. Might also have been that the Hyperspin monitoring page showed them at 99.5% uptime or less at the time (http://www.hyperspin.com/ranking.php?type=1) and Micfo have a 99.9% guarantee.

Either way, I would be tempted, only I've paid an additional $80 on offers so I've got a permanant 1TB of bandwidth and about 32GB of disk space anyway! I only pay $7.95 per month for a year and I've got a .com domain paid for through them for another 21 months! correction - 18 months. Stupid American date formats in the Invoices section!

I could have coughed up another $20 or so recently to upgrade my domain and database numbers to what the new signups get (Micfo have rejigged their allocations), but I didn't need it then so I didn't bother and the offer's gone now.

It won't be a great loss to remove the blog, plus it'll save a load of the spam hassle! And if we really nead an additional domain/database beyond the six I have, the FloridaHomesDirectory.co.uk website is hosted on its own. Abi was originally planning on using that anyway, but it might as well go on my hosting with the huge space/bandwidth and the rest of the personal stuff :)

And as if to prove a point, after fixing the comment body check, I got a new successful comment spam for adult DVDs over night. Obviously it was being so successful in blocking them because if it got past the URL check then the script was erroring!

Two months on from my original Death of a Blog post, I think I really am going to kill the thing off. I've not posted anything for ages, I keep getting more and more spam (although most of it is still being successfully blocked) and it's not really bei...
